As consumers become increasingly aware of the environmental impact of fast fashion and the textile industry, brands are taking necessary steps to improve their practices. One overlooked area is the production of apparel labels. With a high focus on innovation, Trimco Group has recently incorporated TENCEL™ x REFIBRA™ technology as a material for biobased apparel labels to explore the benefits of this new technology and its positive impact on the environment.

So, what is TENCEL™ x REFIBRA™ technology and how does it work?

The TENCEL™ x REFIBRA™ technology uses a closed-loop system in production, where all solvents and chemicals used are recycled and repurposed. During production, the system diverts any leftover materials to use in the next batch of production, creating no wasted resources. This closed-loop system ensures that no harmful chemicals leak into the environment, reducing pollution.

By including a TENCEL™ x REFIBRA™ label in your branding, you can ensure your garment remains part of the circular loop. The pioneering REFIBRA™ technology involves upcycling cotton scraps from garment production. These cotton scraps are transformed into cotton pulp. A substantial proportion – up to one-third –of this is added to wood pulp, and the combined raw material is transformed to produce new virgin TENCEL™ Lyocell fibers. This innovative type of material and recycling process is considered a highly sustainable option for man-made cellulosic fibers.

Polyester labels take up to 200 years to decompose, causing harm to the environment, but the TENCEL™ x REFIBRA™ labels decompose within two months, thus reducing waste.

The technology reduces the carbon footprint by minimizing waste production and energy consumption. It is a significant step towards sustainability, and Trimco is committed to making an impact while partnering with other fashion industry stakeholders for greener solutions.

As stakeholders in the fashion industry, brands play a crucial role in reversing the negative impact of fashion production on the environment. Trimco Group's incorporation of TENCEL™ x REFIBRA™ technology in the production of apparel labels and trims is a significant step towards sustainability. This innovative technology not only creates a more responsible alternative to traditional labels but also produces a high-quality label that delivers comfort and durability, facilitating circular initiatives and fiber-to-fiber recycling.
